New UNESCO World Heritage Site
In June, the capital of Barbados - historic Bridgetown - and its surrounding Garrison was rewarded World Heritage status by UNESCO.
The website of UNESCO's World Heritage Convention vividly describes the latest addition as:
"...an outstanding example of British colonial architecture consisting of a well-preserved old town built in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, which testifies to the spread of Great Britain's Atlantic colonial empire. The property also includes a nearby military garrison which consists of numerous historic buildings. With its serpentine urban lay-out, the property testifies to a different approach to colonial town-planning compared to the Spanish and Dutch colonial cities of the region which were built along a grid plan."

In addition, the official Barbados World Heritage site offers an in-depth history on the settlement of Bridgetown:

The committee team has also successfully implemented a number of activities including walk-throughs of the Bridgetown and Garrison areas.
The Scotland District area and the Industrial Heritage of Barbados are also being considered for UNESCO World Heritage status. The Government of Barbados is also preparing a proposal to have Harrison’s Cave included in Barbados’ tentative list of sites.
